Growing an R&D Organization in China
Challenge: A leading multinational consumer healthcare products company, with highly aggressive goals for expanding its business in China, identified an urgent need to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of their Chinese Research & Development organization. The challenges they faced included: meeting their objectives while doubling their technical staff in the the face of the highly competitive Chinese labor market; significantly reorganizing the division to accommodate a new business model; and relocating three facilities in different cities to a new central location in China.
Solution: Through a series of meetings with key R&D leaders and managers in the US and China, we identified the critical issues and concerns that required urgent attention so that the R&D organization in China could more effectively address its challenges and accelerate progress toward its objectives. We subsequently led a meeting with the R&D leadership team that allowed them to uncover and express their concerns while “maintaining face.” This enabled them to propose solutions to overcome roadblocks and get back on track as rapidly and effectively as possible.
Results: The head of Global R&D subsequently told us that our work together “served as a catalyst that removed inertia” and resulted in accelerating decisions and actions critical to achieving the company’s growth and development objectives in China. This included enabling the China R&D management team to get to the heart of key issues, think about their challenges in new ways, and spark and act on new ideas for addressing their challenges.
