Balancing Multiple Strategies / Initiatives When Everything’s Important

Regardless of the economy, one of the greatest challenges companies face is executing multiple strategies when everything seems important. As conflicting goals and actions compete for resources, these efforts can end up in what I call “Strategic Gridlock” – persistent organizational problems that grind progress to a halt. To break out of the cycle:

  1. Question your own assumptions about priorities, goals and actions:

    • Are all of the goals and actions of your plans really necessary to accomplish your objectives? Can you get the results you want by other means?
    • Do the goals and actions have to be carried out by your employees, or can they be accomplished by an alliance partner, consultants, or outsourcing arrangements?
    • Are there some activities that your company is currently doing that could be cancelled or suspended to free up resources?
  2. Enlist others in the questioning process. Involving those who are involved in executing the goals and actions will give you a broader perspective on the challenge.

Once you go through the questioning process, you’re likely to discover that you have more options than you realized were possible. This can free up resources and eliminate many current and potential conflicts.
